Hello it’s me.
It was the worst of weeks it was the best of weeks.
A few bad things have happened recently. I dropped an entire jar of pepper on my floor this morning and can’t stop sneezing. Also, last week I was unceremoniously dumped via text after almost a year of dating (insert that one emoji that’s like “bleh!” with the tongue sticking out). A few takeaways:
1/ Live and learn crash and burn, etc
2/ I have confirmed for certain that guys who quote movies and say “you don’t know what movie that’s from?!” are red flags.
3/ Sometimes you feel lonelier with someone than when you’re single (insert appropriate Brené Brown quote).
4/ I now have more time for my passion projects (bopping around town listening to audio books while sipping my iced shaken espresso).
It was also the best week of my life because I got to produce a pilot presentation for a major TV network in my home state!! It was magical and I feel like my dreams are coming true.
I didn’t have as much time for TV because I was MAKING TV, (that’s showbiz, baby) but I DID have time for audio books because I just downloaded Scribd ($10/month unlimited audio book app) and it has changed my life. This is not an ad! But I wish it was!
My email is already too long so I’ll have to resort to ratings out of 7 rather than my cute bitmojis.
TV
Loot (Apple TV)- Loot is light, fluffy, funny, rom com, perfect. Remember that show Dakota Johnson did called “Ben and Kate?” the adorable guy who played her brother is the love interest in this show. I love will they or won’t they and workplace comedy. 7/7
Maggie (Hulu)- I REALLY wanted to like Maggie. It stars the blonde girl from Four Weddings but it’s a less funny version of That’s So Raven with unbearable “witty” banter. 3/7
Only Murders In the Building (Hulu) - Season 2 is fun and I like the addition of Cara Delevingne because I’ve never heard her speak. They seem to be getting a littttleee gimicky but I’m still having fun. 5/7
Everything’s Trash (Hulu) - Phoebe Robinson’s cute Freeform show. I used to like her podcast and the show is just like the podcast stories she told! Some of the jokes seem like they were written in the early pandemic but that’s ok!! 5/7
Brokenwood Murders (Acorn) - I’ve moved on from British mysteries and am now into NEW ZEALAND mysteries. A whole new world. It’s like the Montana of the British empire and I love it! It takes place in a tiny town where somehow there is a murder every week. Think Stars Hollow- sized town. 7/7
My Life is Murder (Acorn)- Another New Zealand mystery- new murder every week of course but this one takes place in the big city. Lighter accents and chicer vibes. 6/7
Reality
Love Island UK (Hulu)- I’m all caught up. I LOVE the Casa Amor section of the show. I’m invested in a couple I didn’t think I would be (cough, Ekin and Davide) and uninvested in a couple I thought I would be (cough, Tasha and whatshisname). The most recent recoupling was a real nail biter too. I’ll probably stop watching soon because the end of the season gets really boring but I want to see if Dami and Indiyah rekindle. 6/7
I also started Love Island US, F-Boy Island, and The Bachelorette and froze because there were too many options and I couldn’t decide or keep up. If anyone has recs for which I should watch next plz tell me!!
Southern Charm (Bravo) - I checked in on these crazy kids after a few seasons away and they are doing a little worse for wear!! It turns out years of binge drinking take a toll. Still fun tho! 4/7
BOOKS
City of Likes by Jenny Mollen - Sometimes a lacklustre book hides behind a pretty cover. I had this on my wish list for months! But it was just about a wealthy NY lady who became a momfluencer and became really superficial. Sigh. 4/7
The Night Swim by Megan Goldin- The best book of the month! A true crime podcaster covers a crime that has another crime beneath it that intersects with the original crime!! 7/7
Too Good To Be True by Carola Lovering- Very Gone Girl adjacent. Unreliable narrator, philandering husband, conniving wife, but without the bite and thrill of Gone Girl. 5/7
Meant to be Mine by Hannah Orenstein- See my review for Maggie above and apply it here! Girl knows the date she’ll meet her true love, comedy and drama ensue. I gave up after a very unnecessary tragedy hits halfway through. 3/7
They Never Learn by Layne Fargo - Dark academia heads, this one’s for you!! A professor kills bad male students over the years until a British crime task force lady figures her out. 6/7
True Crime Story by Joseph Knox - Similar to the book about the podcast, this book is about a true crime author writing a book that covers years of emails. I thought it was real until I realized it was fiction halfway through. Very unique and creative, just long-winded and repetitive. 5/7
Can’t Look Away by Carola Lovering- A very disappointing book. Similar to Carola’s Too Good To Be True, the plot is better than the execution (I’m being a lil sassy today!! hard to impress me these days!!) 4/7
OK if you have any TV recs let me know, I’ve gotta get out of my rut. TTYL BYE!
