Well, I ruptured my eardrum which means I’m dizzy as a bizzy and can’t hear for shite. It also makes music sound like it’s inside of a tin can which isn’t pleasant- and explains my initially negative review of Beyonce’s new album. I was like “why is her voice so far away and gravelly?” and then realized it was a me problem.
I’ve been stuck at home sick for a week which means I’ve been spiraling about life and society at large. But luckily I have Pedialite and The Resident (the first two seasons of which I do believe might be better than Grey’s Anatomy) to keep me going.
Outside of lying on my couch like a damsel and trying to shower without getting water in my ear (VERY difficult task), I do have quite a bit of content to discuss.
The Resident (now on Netflix)- Grey’s Anatomy meets House (not as witty as House, but a little edgier than Grey’s). Logan from Gilmore Girls is a resident who goes up against bureaucracy and evil profit-minded hospital execs. He squints his eyes and speaks in a husky voice that is maybe supposed to be rock n roll? Emily from Revenge and Raj from 90210 star as well! I’m actually learning a lot about the American healthcare system and having fun along the way. 5/5
Awkward (MTV)- On a whim I started watching this 2011 classic. The first few seasons have all you could dream of in a teen show. Will they won’t they, hilarious antics and misunderstandings galore. By the fourth season, the main character becomes an insufferable serial monogamist, but it was a good run. If you need a teen comedy with a narration that rivals Carrie Bradshaw cheesiness, look no further. 3/5
The Gentleman (Netflix)-I liked the first two episodes and then completely lost interest! Maybe it was moving too fast or had too much wheelin’ and dealin’ (phrase of the month). Who’s to say? 3/5
Resident Alien (Peacock) - I’m not a sci fi girl, but I’ve always loved this show. I don’t really care about the alien stuff but I like living in the Colorado town and am very invested in the characters! 4/5
Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO) - My favorite recent quote is from Freddy Funkhouser who said, “I drove here full throttle from the Cabazon outlets.” He’s always wheelin’ and dealin’ across the Inland Empire. 5/5
Apple Never Falls Far (Peacock) - I’m two episodes in and not hooked yet… more soon x.
So Help Me Todd (CBS)- Lisa Rinna took a star turn in the first episode of the second season. This show continues to be a weekly staple! 4/5
**Note that my new favorite series Elsbeth returns to our screens TOMORROW**
Quiet On The Set (Max) - The untold story of the toxic and abusive environment inside early 2000s Nickelodeon (The Amanda Show, All That, Drake and Josh, Zoey 101 etc. etc!!) and harrowing accounts from former child stars and crew who expose the unchecked power the network and Dan Schneider had over these shows and everyone in the orbit. I was VERY DISTURBED to see how much went unsaid around the treatment of some of my favorite child actors, especially Drake Bell. I think this was so impactful because we watched many of these actors grow up, and in most cases, fall by the wayside. There’s going to be a bonus episode added on 4/7, I wonder if it will address the controversy surrounding Drake Bell. 5/5
Love Is Blind Reunion (Netflix) - Better than previous reunions! But I did not need to hear updates from past cast members. I believe they didn’t focus on the current cast drama because of all the online hate they’ve all been getting. 3/5
Vanderpump Rules (Bravo)- My friend Carlos astutely observed that The Valley is the future of Vanderpump Rules. The show seems to be at the end of the line, but that’s ok because they can all just move on over to The Valley. 2/5
The Valley (Bravo)- The Valley is not aspirational in any way but it IS what Vanderpump Rules used to be. Messy sweaty people who are super close friends and causing chaos in each others lives. Now they live in the Valley and have kids. Brittany’s accent is 10 times stronger than it was two years ago, Jax is maybe in love with Kristen? two of the couples look identical to me, and it’s somehow perfect. 5/5
Survivor (CBS)- I was optimistic about this season but I’m just not as hooked as usual. Maybe because there are three women who look identical?? Or maybe because everyone is ~quirky~ and there’s no traditionally cool people as foil. I’m still watching and it might turn around. Stay tuned.
Bye Baby by Carola Lovering - This author captures millennial New York and New England small liberal arts college culture perfectly. She also captures the subtle, shifting power dynamics in female friendships so well it gives me chills. The plot is a little cray cray at times, but that doesn’t matter because her observations on society and friendship are spot on. 4.5/5
What Happened to Nina? by Dervla McTiernan- Fictional version of the Gabby Petito story but set in Vermont told from the parents’ perspectives. Good but falls apart towards the end. 3/5
Kill For Me, Kill For You by Steve Cavanagh- I’m halfway through and loving it!! Supposedly the next Silent Patient and Gone Girl.
Alright, now back to feeling sorry for myself and my ear. TTYL!! TTFN!
Get better soon!
